September is Suicide Prevention Month: You Are Not Alone

Every life is precious, and we want everyone to know that there is help.

At Coastal Wellness and Life Coaching Center, we want to take a moment to recognize that September is Suicide Prevention Month. This is an important time to come together, raise awareness, and remind ourselves of the power we each have to support those who may be struggling.

We know that suicide is a deeply painful topic, but it's one we must talk about with compassion, empathy, and openness. Every life is precious, and we want everyone to know that there is help, there is hope, and there is always someone ready to listen.

Understanding the Pain Behind the Silence

When someone is hurting so deeply that they consider suicide, they often feel alone and overwhelmed. The truth is that many people around them care deeply - they just might not know how to show it or may not be aware of the struggle. At Coastal Wellness, we believe that by talking openly and being there for each other, we can create a world where no one feels like they have to face their darkest moments alone.

Signs That Someone Might Be Struggling

Recognizing when someone is in pain can be the first step toward offering them the support they need. Sometimes the signs are clear, but other times they’re not as easy to spot. Here are a few things to look out for:

  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy
  • Sudden changes in mood - whether that’s deep sadness, anger, or even unusual calmness after a tough period
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or like they’re a burden to others
  • Changes in sleep patterns - sleeping too little or too much
  • Risky behavior or increased use of substances like alcohol or drugs

If you notice any of these signs, know that your presence and care could make a world of difference. Sometimes, just reaching out and asking, "How are you really doing?" can open the door to a life-saving conversation.

How You Can Help

It’s okay to feel unsure about what to say or do, but remember - being there for someone doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers. Simply being present and showing that you care can be the greatest gift you can offer. Here are some ways to help:

  • Start the conversation: It can be as simple as saying, "I’ve noticed you’ve been having a hard time lately, and I’m here if you want to talk."
  • Listen without judgment: Sometimes, people just need to feel heard and understood. Give them the space to share their feelings without trying to fix everything right away.
  • Encourage them to seek professional help: Gently suggest talking to a therapist, counselor, or support group. You can even offer to help them find resources or go with them for support.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, visit the Lifeline online at https://988lifeline.org or go to your nearest emergency room.
