What is PTSD?

Symptoms of PTSD

1. Intrusive Memories

  • Flashbacks: Reliving the traumatic event as if it’s happening again.

Effective Treatment Options for PTSD

What is EMDR?


EMDR is a psychotherapy technique that helps individuals process and integrate traumatic memories through bilateral stimulation (typically side-to-side eye movements). Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for PTSD.


How EMDR Works


EMDR therapy involves eight phases:


1. History Taking

The therapist gathers detailed information about the client's past and current experiences.

2. Preparation

The client learns about EMDR and practices self-soothing techniques to manage emotional distress.

3. Assessment

Identifying the specific traumatic memories to be processed, along with the associated negative beliefs and emotions.

4. Desensitization

The client focuses on the traumatic memory while following the therapist’s finger movements or another form of bilateral stimulation.

5. Installation

Positive beliefs are strengthened to replace the negative ones associated with the trauma.

6. Body Scan

The client checks for any remaining physical tension related to the trauma and processes it if necessary.

7. Closure

Ensuring the client feels stable and safe before ending the session.

8. Reevaluation

Reviewing the progress and addressing any remaining issues in subsequent sessions.
