Hi!
My name is Lisa Pitts and I’m a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern.
Making that first big step to call and ask for help for yourself or for your child is hard and I want to make that easier by giving you a friendly face and a story, so things don’t seem so scary and foreign. I’m just a person who has been through my own struggles and I want you to know that counseling does not have to be taboo. Most of us counselors get counseling too!
I went to counseling for the first time when I was 16 years old because my parents had divorced and I was struggling with teenage things. What I really remember about my therapist was her being someone I could talk to that was outside of my family and didn’t judge what I was saying. That was enough. I couldn’t tell you what tools she gave me or things I learned anymore, but I can tell you that it felt amazing to vent to someone about both my mom and my dad to someone that was not my mom or my dad. From that point on, I knew I wanted to help people. I ended up joining the police force in Germany, before my path eventually led me to the counseling and health field here in the U.S.
At Coastal Wellness, I work with individuals ages 10 and up. I believe that mental health and overall health and wellbeing are very intertwined. I have a certificate in nutrition and personal training, which I use in session often, to help achieve whole body wellness. I myself have learned how small swaps in your lifestyle can create enormous changes in how you feel on a daily basis.
In addition, I am an ART trained therapist. ART, accelerated resolution therapy, (sorry it’s not actual art), is a unique therapy that replaces negative images and negative feelings associated with them that cause the symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, phobia, trauma, with positive images, using bilateral brain stimulation. When I’m not in the office, I love to travel, hike, do yoga, try different restaurants and read! I hope this intro helps ease any anxieties or worries about coming to counseling for the first time & helps you gather the courage to take that next step toward healing.
